Absent But Present

Elizabeth Haughton
(1943-2024)

Following Learners into Happiness

Elizabeth Haughton’s delight in seeing learners succeed remains at the heart of the Haughton Learning Center.  Since Elizabeth’s passing, a team of her colleagues, led by Shelly Yeich and Leah Herzog, has been preparing for publication curriculum she developed during her years in Napa. Mental Math, Dominoes, and Instant Words are among the projects on her to-do list that we are carrying forward.

Our newly released four-volume Mental Math series is one result of that work. Its accompanying instructional videos also fulfill Elizabeth’s wish to give instructors practical demonstrations alongside the written materials. With the help of Dave Tearpak, an accomplished teacher who understands the importance of happy learners, we are preparing videos to accompany previously published titles as well.

Elizabeth’s absence is deeply felt, but her presence continues in the daily work of teaching and learning. As we complete these projects and share them with new generations of instructors, we carry forward the purpose that animated her work: following learners into the happiness of fluency.
